The Kentigern Way

Following the Saint's journey from Hoddom to Glasgow

Biggar to New Lanark

16 mile (26 km) OS Landranger 72
Tinto by-ways

This section of the walk is mainly on-road following a series of quiet byways to New Lanark.
For those who do not wish to walk on-road there is a regular bus service between Biggar and Lanark. Using this would have the advantage of giving more time to spend in Biggar and/or New Lanark where there is much to see.
However for purists who wish to complete the whole journey on foot, the route follows pleasant, relatively traffic free byways and passes by a number of places of historical interest.
Map Biggar to New Lanark

From the war memorial at the foot of Biggar main-street cross the Cadger's Brig and go up the hill following the Cycle Route signs along Lindsaylands Road. After about 2 km, at the junction with Cormiston Road a short diversion left leads to the Culter Motte and Bailey and the first encounter with the River Clyde. Return to the junction and take the road through Cormiston to Thankerton where the A72 is crossed at Fallburn (!Caution busy road!) a short step from the Tinto Hill car park and the Tinto Iron Age Fort. Continue on the minor road past the car park, taking the right fork at Lochyloch and right again at the T-junction beyond, heading into Carmichael past the historic Cairngryffe Kirk.

At Carmichael cross-roads go left, past Drumalbin to reach the A70 just after Stewarton House. Cross the A70 (!Caution busy road!) and follow a footpath on the far side for about 500m then, turn right, down the side road leading to Sandilands. At Sandilands turn left to cross the bridge over the Douglas Water and just beyond at the top of the hill turn right to follow the minor road leading to the Clyde Weir. Cross the weir to meet the start of the Clyde Walkway and follow the path down to New Lanark.
