Annan to Lochmaben

21 mile (33 km) passing by Hoddom. OS Landranger 85

The Kentigern Way takes as its official start point ,the Annan Old Parish Church in Church Street. From there a short walk westwards along the High Street past the nearby Annan Mueum and St Andrew’s Parish Church (both in Bank Street) leads to the bridge over the Annan River. Just before the bridge turn right down Battery Street and descend to our start point on the Annandale Way.

Should the walker wish to commence from the start of the Annandale Way they would turn left at the bridge and go west along the river bank before crossing to the west bank close to the rail bridge.

The Kentigern Way follows the banks of the River Annan northwards through Brydekirk to Hoddom and St. Kentigern’s Graveyard. (Food is available at Hoddom Castle and limited accommodation facilities are available at Hoddom). For walkers arriving in Annan by public transport this may make a convenient stopping point for an initial short day’s walking. Beyond Hoddom the route continues north-westwards to reach the ruins of St Mungo’s Church.

From here a choice of route is available. If continuing to Lochmaben the westward branch of the Annandale way is followed. On approaching Castle Loch on the south side of Lochmaben the ruined remains of Lochmaben Castle can be visited.

If accommodation is not available in Lochmaben a wider range of accommodation facilities is available in Lockerbie. To reach Lockerbie take the road north-eastwards leading from St Mungo’s church for just over 1 km towards Shawhead, where the east leg of the Annandale way is encountered. This is then followed to Lockerbie.
