Route Heritage – Traquair to Peebles

Introducion

The following historical ‘snapshots’ are intended only to give the walker some brief details of the various places of interest that he will pass as he proceeds along the Kentigern way. They are organised south to north in the direction of the walk and in the order he will encounter them. It is hoped that they will serve to add interest to the route and offer a glimpse of the rich historical context of the landscape he is traversing.

The information contained in these short descriptions has been gleaned from many sources – too many to list individually here. The author wishes to pay due tribute to the work of those others that he has made use of while admitting full culpability for any errors or misinterpretations that have occurred.

Traquair to Peebles

Drove Road PeeblesIn the 1700s cattle from all over the north of Scotland were collected into large herds and walked over a network of drove roads south into England to feed a growing Empire. On this section of the walk clear signs of the old drove road from Falkirk to the border can be followed.
Peebles Museum/John BuchanThe fine building of the Chambers Institution houses the museum which offers a lively array of permanent displays and changing exhibitions.
Peebles ChurchThe first church in Peebles was built in the 5th century and was dedicated to St Kentigern. Throughout the ages the church has experienced many changes of location and been witness to many historical events.
Neidpath ChurchA bit off our route but well worth a visit, Neidpath Castle dates from the 14th Century. It was involved in events during the Scottish Wars of Independence and held out against Cromwell in 1850. You might even be lucky enough to see the resident ghost.
